Hongjiang Ancient City is located in Hongjiang District, Huaihua City, Hunan Province, at the confluence of Yuanshui and Wushui. It originated in the Spring and Autumn Period, took shape in the prosperous Tang Dynasty, and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is one of the best preserved ancient architectural complexes in China. Hongjiang Ancient City is famous for distributing tung oil, timber, white wax and opium, and is known as “Pearl of Xiangxi”, “Little Nanjing” and “Southwest Metropolis”. According to experts’ research, there are more than 380 Ming and Qing ancient buildings in Hongjiang Ancient City, which are still well preserved, such as houses, temples, escort agencies, money houses, firms, foreign firms, workshops, shops, inns, brothels, newspapers and cigarette houses.
