2012–2026: Overseas Practice in Southeast Asia
Architect Joseph Chan was invited by the International Exchange Committee of the Taichung City Architects Association to share insights from more than a decade of international architectural practice.
From venturing westward to the United Kingdom and Europe, expanding eastward into China, and moving southward into Southeast Asia, the lecture brought together practical experience from multinational projects undertaken between 2017 and 2026. It explored how Taiwanese architects can move beyond Taiwan while navigating cultural differences, regulatory systems, team management, market development, and the challenges and sacrifices of working overseas.
Going abroad is not simply about entering new markets—it is also a journey of rediscovering architectural practice and one’s professional identity.
