The proposed main gate design for National Kandawgyi Garden takes its cues from the colonial heritage of Pyin Oo Lwin, while integrating contemporary structural and formal elements to create a gateway that is both contextually sensitive and forward-looking.
Design Inspiration
Colonial Roof Typology: The steep gabled and multi-pitched rooflines from the colonial period form the primary reference point, echoing the architectural character of Pyin Oo Lwin’s historic landscape.
Contemporary Structural Language: Modern design influences, including exposed supporting frameworks and expressive geometries, provide a strong architectural presence and re-interpret tradition through a contemporary lens.
Programmatic Development
Two welcoming pavilion zones define the threshold experience.
A central ticketing area links the two pavilions, forming the main functional component of the gate.
Material selection emphasizes local availability and craftsmanship, with a reddish tonal palette used to visually harmonize the structure with the surrounding built environment.
Design Vision
The main gate acts as both a physical and symbolic entry point to one of Myanmar’s most celebrated national parks. Through the synthesis of colonial references and contemporary detailing, the design establishes a sense of arrival that is culturally rooted, materially sustainable, and architecturally distinctive.
