Gukeng Columbarium

The design of the columbarium draws inspiration from local culture, nature, and the symbolism of life and memory. Rather than a place of sorrow, it is envisioned as a space of warmth, continuity, and reflection—one that honors the past while offering peace to the present.

  1. A New Home from the Old
Through the reinterpretation of traditional Minnan red-brick architecture, the façade integrates familiar cultural elements that evoke comfort and memory. The columbarium becomes a “new home” for the departed—one that is rooted in heritage and emotion.

  2. Cycle of Renewal – Inspired by Bamboo Shoots
Located in the fertile lands of Gukeng, known for its abundant bamboo and shoots, the project embraces their symbolism of life, resilience, and renewal. The elegant, upward-growing forms of bamboo are abstracted into architectural elements, aligning with the park’s role as a space for remembrance and rebirth.

  3. Illuminating the Spirit – A Landscape of Light
Each point of light represents the reunion of a family. As warm light filters through the gaps between bricks, it forms a constellation of gentle glows—symbolizing the ongoing connection between the living and the departed, and transforming the space into one of quiet celebration and belonging.
