Integrating the Original Temple into the New Columbarium
The columbarium’s design is rooted in Buddhist principles, while also embracing modern architectural vocabulary. The goal is to create a “columbarium for the future,” integrating the latest technologies while reflecting the essence of the existing temple, which boasts a rich history. The design is guided by a cohesive narrative that considers the building’s axis, orientation, space, material, and volume.
Design Challenges and Solutions
Integration of Old and New : The primary challenge was to integrate the original temple’s historical elements into the new columbarium design. This was achieved through rigorous research, analysis, and iterative refinement. Traditional architectural elements, such as rooflines, ornamental details, and spatial arrangements, were carefully reinterpreted and incorporated into the modern design.
Light and Shadow : The design features vents reminiscent of ancient caves where Buddha sought shelter. These vents invite the interaction of light and shadow, creating a sacred and dynamic ambiance within the building.
Collaborative Brainstorming Interdisciplinary Collaboration : Architects, historians, engineers, and community stakeholders were involved in collaborative brainstorming sessions to ensure a holistic approach to the design. Input from various disciplines helped address challenges from multiple perspectives, leading to innovative solutions that balanced historical preservation with modern requirements. User Experience : The design was continuously refined based on user experience considerations, ensuring that the new columbarium is not only visually appealing but also functional and accessible for visitors. Pathways, signage, and interior layouts were designed to provide a seamless and respectful experience for those visiting the columbarium. Our rigorous design process, characterized by careful research, iterative refinement, and collaborative brainstorming, has successfully addressed the challenge of integrating the original temple into the new columbarium. The result is a harmonious blend of historical preservation and modern innovation, creating a columbarium that honors its past while looking forward to the future.
